6 Things to consider before building your website

When thinking about having a website, your main concern, like most people, are costs.  I will try to break down website costs, options, and alternatives.

Domain name

This will be your dot com name. Prices starting about $10.00 to $1200.00 per year.  The higher price of the domain name due to keyword strength.  The more popular the keyword is in search results the more expensive the domain name will cost.

Website Hosting

Once you've decided on your domain name, you will need a place that will host your website.  Prices can start as low as $5.00 - $25.00per month.  Options for hosting plans vary depending on shared vs private servers, additional resources, and or addon services like on-demand security protection. There are plenty of web hosting companies to choose from, we like Godaddy, I have used them for over 10 years and their customer service is good.

Email

Sure you can easily get a free Gmail account, but you'll want that professional look and definitely the proper compliance when dealing with government agencies.  Most web hosting companies will offer free email addresses with hosting plans which are alright but at times lack reliability.  Or you can choose to have Microsoft or Google Gsuite manage your business email accounts for about $5.00 per month per user, which isn't bad especially when you'll also get full access to their office suite products and apps.

Security certificate (SSL Certificate)

For brochure websites, maybe this isn't needed.  If your planning to sell products on your website then definitely invest.

This security certificate ensures users that the website they are visiting is the  legitimate owner. Secured socket layers are added protection for your website. It uses https:// instead of HTTP://.  As always there are free and paid options.  Go ahead and purchase 2 -3 years upfront and just worry about renewing payment.  The free option is slightly more work, by having to re-cert every month.  Save your time.

Graphic Software

You may need software to create or edit images and videos.  Luckily there are options from Free to Professional.  At NYCWebDesign Pro, we use Adobe Creative Suite, more specifically, Adobe XD, Photoshop and After Effects for prototyping, designing and editing.

Plug-ins

There is a plug-in for everything.  Using too many plug-ins will only slow your website down.  Be efficient, be aware, and simplify the need for plug-ins.  We'll recommend a few that we use.  Most plug-ins require updates and if you read my previous writing, upgrades and updates can at times be problematic.  So be warned.

Final thoughts

So without even building a website, the cost for a domain, web hosting, and email, would start around $200 - $500 per year.
